Bluetooth 5 spec details finalized, improved speed and efficiency expected

Image
Bluetooth SIG (Bluetooth Special Interest Group), the governing body responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of Bluetooth standards, has finally provided details regarding Bluetooth version 5. The new standard is a significant update over the existing Bluetooth v4.2 iteration, available in majority of smartphones and other mobile devices these days. Bluetooth  5 features two times the bandwidth of Bluetooth v4.2. It also has four times the wireless range and eight times the capacity to broadcast messages. With the new version, the maximum transfer speed can reach to 2Mbps. It's also mentioned that the bandwidth can be decreased to get a four times longer range. Interestingly, those having smartphones with older Bluetooth versions need not worry. Version 5 is backward-compatible with v4.2 or even v4.0 (for Low Energy devices) and up to v1.1 (for others). Bluetooth version 5 is also more efficient and suitable for internet of things (IoT) devices. The ...

Online video streaming rises in China as userbase surpasses 514 million

Image
China's online video streaming is booming with the user base expanding to 514 million, creating unprecedented business opportunities, an industry report said today. As of June, the number of streaming service users reached 514 million, accounting for 72.4% of China's Internet population, according to the 2016 China Online Streaming Development Study Report, released by China Netcasting Services Association (CNSA). The association was set up in 2011 and published its first report in 2015. The 2016 report says watching video online has become the primary form of online entertainment in China, followed by online gaming and reading literature, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today. It also shows 35.5 percent of streaming users paid for content this year, rising 18.5 percentage points year-on-year. It is the fastest annual growth in recent years. Most of the paid users are monthly subscribers. Zhou Jie, deputy secretary of the CNSA, said the trend suggests good comme...

Simplified USSD to be rolled out for cashless payments via feature phones soon

Image
NEW DELHI: Amid cash crunch due to demonetization, a more user friendly and simple version of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) used on feature mobile phones for making cashless payments will be rolled out in next 15 days. "NCPI is already working to make USSD (*99#) very simple, convenient, robust and to link it with UPI. So in another 15-20 days, we will have a very new version of USSD with many strong and robust easy to handle features," NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant told reporters in a press conference here. At present there are about 400 million feature mobile handset users in the country. The move will push the digital transaction in a big way particularly in rural areas where penetration of smart phone and Internet is skewed. Besides, the panel is also working out ways to achieve inter-operatibility of unified payment interface of various banks. This will enable account holders to use their banks' UPI with a subscribers of other banks' UPI for ma...

Leaked slides hint at Apple’s AI development plans

Image
Apple seems to be working hard on its artificial intelligence goals behind the curtains. A set of slides from the company's AI conference in Barcelona has leaked online, suggesting some key research focus areas of Apple. As reported by The Quartz website, the conference is said to be presented by Russ Salakhutdinov, director of  AI  research at Apple. The Cupertino-based tech firm is said to be working on smaller neural networks that will operate independently instead of relying on several other server connections. The neural networks are said to be 4.5 times smaller than the regular ones and have twice the speed. For end users, this could help future iPhone and iPad models to recognize a person's face, location and more in an image more easily than is possible now. We may also see a glimpse of the company's AI progress it in the upcoming iPad models or the next year's iPhones. Besides this, the slides talk about 'LiDAR' or Light Detection and Ranging, which...

VW Issues Software Update, Faces Billions In Fees

Image
The great Volkswagen diesel emissions cheating scandal has slowly moved towards its resolution, leaving 11 million customers around the world wondering how their car purchase will come back to haunt them. While the courts sort out the fees–an amount that has already reached nearly $15 billion in restitution in the US alone, which covers only half a million affected customers–and the government sorts out what penalties the company will face for blatantly violating environmental protection standards, the manufacturer has scrambled to come up with a software update that will save them. Over one million vehicles under VW’s brand have already been repaired with the update. This fix should disable the “tricky” software that allowed the vehicle to operate in one mode whenever it detected emissions testing software, then switch to a more powerful but environmentally harmful driving mode when the vehicle was in the clear. This flies in the face of  a massive fraudulent campaign VW ena...

Introducing Facebook's new terrestrial connectivity systems — Terragraph and Project ARIES

Image
Facebook believes that people — no matter where they live — deserve a consistent, high-bandwidth internet experience. While access to high-speed internet varies across the globe, both developing and developed economies can suffer from insufficient data rates. Slow internet speed is especially prevalent in developing economies where mobile networks are often unable to achieve data rates better than 2G. Developed economies are hampered by Wi-Fi and LTE infrastructure that is unable to keep up with the exponential growth in the consumption of photos and video at higher and higher resolutions. While solutions such as GPON optical fiber can provide 100s of megabits up to several gigabits of capacity, the high costs associated with laying the fiber makes the goal of ubiquitous gigabit citywide coverage unachievable and unaffordable for almost all countries. Similarly, conventional means of increasing the capacity of wireless networks, such as licensing more radio frequency spectrum or in...

Line Following Robot

Image
This Project Line Following Autonomous Robot is based on 8 bit Microcontroller. This Robot follows the black line which is drawn over the white surface or it follows the white line which is drawn over the black surface. The infrared sensors are used to sense the line. When the infrared signal falls on the white surface, it gets reflected and if it falls on the black surface, it is not reflected this principle is used to scan the Lines for the Robot. All the above systems are controlled by the Microcontroller. Microcontroller gets the signals from the infrared sensors and it drives the motors according to the sensor inputs. Two stepper motors are used to drive the robot. THEORY OF OPERATION-:  How to sense a black line The sensors used for the project are Reflective Object Sensors, 0PB710F that are already ready in the Electronic Lab. The single sensor consists of an infrared emitting diode and a NPN Darlington phototransistor. When a light emitted from the diode is reflected of...

Chinese Tech Consortium To Buy Opera For $1.2B

Image
A group of Chinese tech powerhouses led by Golden Brick Silk Road has made an astounding offer to buy Oslo-based Opera Software ASA’s top-selling product, the Opera web browser, for a little over a billion dollars. The offer, which the board unanimously recommended to its shareholders, would pay out to investors more than 40% higher than the last per-share closing price. Opera is the world’s fifth most widely used web browser with 7.3% of the mobile browser market, a ranking made possible mostly due to its incorporation on mobile devices like smartphones made by Xiaomi Corp and Samsung. The company says that Opera is currently running on more than 280 million devices worldwide… except China. This deal would open up the user base that Kunlun and Qihoo–two of the tech companies involved in the acquisition–currently enjoys in the country. China has an interesting internet-using demographic in that the majority of its population is considered mobile-first or even mobile-only in that ...

More Than Half Of Devices Run Out-Of-Date Software

Image
A new study by Duo Security uncovered some alarming but sadly unsurprising news: more than half of the 2 million devices they looked at for a report were running out-of-date, unprotected software. Whether it was lack of antivirus protocols or operating systems and apps that hadn’t been updated when a patch was released, these devices were therefore vulnerable to hacking, data breaches, ransomware, and more. According to an  article on the study by eSecurityPlanet , “The two million devices we saw are devices used by our customer’s employees to access one or more enterprise applications,” Ash Devata, vice president of Product at Duo. Sean Michael Kerner of eSecurityPlanet added, “The Duo research found that 80 percent of the devices scanned were using Flash, while 32 percent of employees were running older unpatched versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. In addition, 22 percent of the scanned devices were running outdated versions of Java.” One of the pieces of informati...

French Crack Down On Facebook Privacy Violations

Image
The French government is known for some of its more people-centric privacy laws, which is part of the reason so many celebrities choose to make their home in-country. Now, the government is cracking down on some seemingly innocuous terms of service in Facebook’s system, claiming that the current terms violate their privacy laws. Facebook, like many other internet entities, uses cookies that it tracks for up to two years, even on people who are not members of the site and therefore did not agree to the lengthy terms of service. If an internet user clicks a link and watches a video that was uploaded to Facebook instead of YouTube, for example, that individual can view the video without being a member, and that person’s web behavior is tracked. France has said that’s against their laws. While issuing the desist order that Facebook must comply with within three months (at the risk of facing heavy fines), the government also took some further steps to safeguard its citizens privac...
